Why Emma Raducanu is OUT of the French Open
Raducanu, the 2021 US Open winner, will miss the 2024 French Open to focus on her fitness, according to the BBC. The BBC has reported Radacunu will miss the clay court tournament as she aims to, “keep fit for the rest of the year.” Raducanu is currently ranked 205th in the world, per the World Tennis Association, meaning she missed automatic qualification to the tournament and would have had to compete in the qualifying rounds.
The BBC has reported the Briton has not played since her first-round loss in the Madrid Open in April, meaning she will have had a nearly two-month break before she next competes.
Raducanu was beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Maria Lourdes Carle in Madrid, following which she told reporters, “I think from the performance today it was very clear that mentally and emotionally I was exhausted.”
The Canadian-born Brit continued, “I was trying to push through and I was just unable to push through today. I guess the sport is just pretty brutal.” Raducanu’s quotes come after a tough 2023 in which she underwent operations on both wrists and her left ankle, per The Guardian. Per The WTA, Raducanu’s world ranking topped out at 10 in July 2022 but fell to 298 in late 2023 due to her injuries.
The BBC is reporting Raducanu has been practising at the National Tennis Centre in London as she prepares for the grass and hard court season. So far, it is unknown if the 2021 US Open winner will return in time for the Nottingham Open, which kick-starts the WTA grass season for women.
