‘President Bush Didn’t Know Chrissie’- Ex-Husband Andy Mill Talks Fame While Reminiscing Adventurous Marriage With Chris Evert
Alpine ski racer Andy Mill married tennis legend Chris Evert in 1988. At the time, Andy Mill was undoubtedly popular for his achievements at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Austria. However, Evert was in another league altogether when it came to fame. By the time the couple got married, Evert had a whopping 18 women’s singles majors under her belt. As a result, during her marriage to Mill, the skier got plenty of opportunities to meet with some of the most important people on the planet.
In the latest episode of the Wet Fly Swing Fly Fishing Podcast, Mill took listeners back to the memorable time. He also recalled one particular instance where a former US President called on them to pay a visit to the White House.
In terms of exposure, Andy Mill was no match for Chris Evert
Evert’s success as a female professional tennis player was unparalleled during the 1970s and 1980s. It gave her the platform to network with prominent figures around the world.
Comparing their respective exposures, Mill said, “Her exposure was a thousand times greater than mine as an Olympic skier”. He also spoke of moments that gave the couple a chance to meet former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former US President George Bush Senior.
Mill said, “We used to go to 10 Downing Street and have dinner with Margaret Thatcher before Wimbledon.” On their meeting the former US President, Mill added, “President Bush didn’t know Chrissie but obviously he was a tennis player and knew who she was. And that’s what presidents do. They call famous people to hang out with them.”
