Lydia Ko remains an outside chance at the first women’s golf major of the year but she’s going to have to go low to give herself a shot. The Kiwi star treaded water on a stormy day at the Chevron Championship in Texas; she was one-under through 14 holes in her third round before the weather caused play to be suspended due to dangerous playing conditions.
That left her in a share of ninth place at five-under overall, but six shots off the lead held by Atthaya Thitikul at 11-under. The Thai was three-under through 12 holes in her third round and had a one-shot lead over American Nelly Korda, shooting for an incredible fifth LPGA Tour win on the trot, and the charging Canadian Brooke Henderson who was eight-under through 17 holes on moving day.
For the second time in two days, Ko had two bogeys inside her first six holes but she bounced back and carded three birdies through 14. The former world No 1 has 22 holes on Monday (NZT) to make up the six-shot gap; she is capable of doing so and will be encouraged by the fact Henderson, who was at nine-under for the day before a late bogey, has gone so low in the third round.
Ko is aiming to win her third major, and first since winning the Chevron – albeit on a different course – in 2016. Victory would also secure her Hall of Fame status. Chevron Championship – round three leaderboard (round incomplete)
