“ESPN Analyst Shares Heartwarming Story of Chris Evert’s Support During Her Cancer Battle”
Throughout her remarkable career, renowned ESPN anchor Hannah Storm has endured numerous storms. But none could be as difficult as her cancer fight. However, she received comfort and direction from an unexpected source during this personal struggle: Chris Evert, fellow ESPN commentator and tennis legend. As disclosed in her January 2022 announcement, Evert was diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer in December 2021.
After two years of a long battle, she became cancer-free, only for it to return again in December 2023. However, amid all of her struggle, she chose not to succumb to sorrow but to help others fight their battles with this deadly disease. Hannah Storm was among them, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer this January. Storm acknowledged the guidance that she received from Chris Evert during her dark times.
Hannah Storm recently opened up about her battle with DCIS, also known as stage-0 breast cancer. Recalling her moments of despair, she expressed her gratitude for her first-ever female friend in business, Chris Evert. Evert’s fight against ovarian cancer has inspired many people, including Storm herself. “Luckily, because of my friend and fellow ESPN commentator, Chris Evert, I knew where to turn for guidance,” Storm said.
Chris Evert and Hannah Storm organized a cancer research fundraiser on Nov. 16, just days before Storm’s mammography. Evert went above and beyond to provide Storm and her husband, Dan Hicks, with support during the event as a heartfelt gesture of solidarity. Further emphasizing her gratitude to Evert, she said, “The real blessing is that I knew exactly who to call.” After a successful surgery, Storm is now cancer-free.
Knowing how important the fundraising event was, Evert decided to travel despite her own health issues. Storm appreciated this and said, “Chrissie has been through so much chemotherapy and surgery the last few years and doesn’t usually take on voluntary travel, but she agreed to make a rare trip for the fundraiser as a favor to me and my husband Dan Hicks. Chrissie stayed with us, and it was a special time, as we were able to reconnect.”
Hannah Storm gives credit to Chris Evert for her constant support and assurance throughout her journey. But when did they become such good friends?
Evert and Storm’s decades-long friendship
In the cutthroat world of professional commitments and competitions, the bond between Hannah Storm and Chris Evert stands as their greatest strength. Storm, in her latest interview, revealed the journey of their friendship, “I met her when I joined NBC in 1992 and hosted Wimbledon as my first assignment. I had never worked with a woman on air before—there were hardly any of us back then—and it was so great to be with her. We became immediate pals and worked together for many years at NBC and ESPN.”
Besides fortifying their relationship, their shared experiences have encouraged countless others to persevere in the face of life’s most difficult obstacles and to find hope.
