‘Couldn’t Find My Wife’: Jordan Spieth Risked Caddie’s Safety Without Hesitation Once for a Scary Prank
Signing an incorrect scorecard. Getting DQ’ed from the 2024 Genesis Invitational. None of this made Jordan Spieth’s caddie that upset. Unfortunately, people do make mistakes, don’t they?! And Michael Greller, his looper, would have chalked that up to the same. But, that’s not the case every time. Especially so when the PGA Tour Pro goes ahead and pulls a prank on his trusted bagman back in 2017. Yes, you read that right! And surprisingly enough, the now-31-year-old’s caddie seems to remember it even after five years.
“I’ve never been mad at Jordan. He always listens to me,” replied Greller when asked about what was the most upset he has ever been with the PGA Tour Pro. He was queried on the same by Chris Solomon and the rest of his gang from No Laying Up in a video that was released back in February 2024. But was that his full reply? Not even close!
It all happened back at the 2017 Pebble Beach Pro-Am after Jordan Spieth and his caddie finished their second round at Spyglass Hill. And impressively so, the golfer had managed to dish out a 7-under 65 that day, which would inevitably help them win the tournament. But that is a story for another time. Anyways, the athlete was in high spirits; “flying high… excited,” he was, according to Greller.
So Jordan Spieth, his caddie, and the latter’s wife, Ellie, jump into the golfer’s minivan with the looper’s partner sitting in the front seat. “We’re about halfway between Spy & Pebble,” recounts the bagman. “The back door is open on the minivan, and he says, ‘Hey, can you jump out and get that?’… I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’” However, little did he know that the fun was just starting, at least for the athlete!
“So I go back, I close it,” recalled Greller as he surprisingly added, “Jordan just takes off and starts driving.” Was it the old start-and-stop trick in the book? Well, it seemed like that for a moment as the looper ran up about 100 yards to the car when the PGA Tour Pro hit the brakes. “I get close,” said the caddie. “He goes again, then he just takes off. And literally left me.”
But then you might be wondering about Ellie. Unfortunately, she didn’t know what to do at that moment, causing Jordan Spieth’s caddie to hitchhike all the way to Pebble Beach. But after that, he came face-to-face with another problem: “I couldn’t find my wife,” revealed Greller.
Jordan Spieth’s hitchhiker caddie’s guide to Pebble Beach
Wait! Let’s backtrack a bit to when he was stranded on the road. “So, I didn’t have my phone, I had nothing,” said the golfer’s bagman as he recounted about walking half a mile only to hitchhike. “I literally had my thumb out and some random person brought me back to Pebble.” But, as mentioned earlier, if you think his troubles were finally over, then you’re wrong. The reason? Well, after that, he couldn’t seem to locate Ellie; “I couldn’t find my wife,” recalled Michael Greller as he continued with his reply to Chris Solomon’s question.
What happened after that? Fortunately enough, he borrowed some other caddie’s phone and called his wife. “I was actually more mad at Ellie,” admitted Spieth’s bagman, “Like Ellie, how did you let him just take off on me? So Ellie had gone home and I had to borrow a caddie’s phone, call Ellie, and she came back and got me about 45 minutes later.”
His reason appears to be quite valid, in all honesty. Who wouldn’t be upset at being stranded on the road without a phone in this day and age? But thankfully, it seems they were able to move past that hilarious hiccup of sorts. How do we know? Well, take a look at the wins he carded after that incident, including the 2017 Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 4 events, including the Open Championship that same year! Impressive chemistry those two have…
