‘Prison of the Moment’: Bitter Jordan Spieth Truth Ended Any Chances of Getting Near Scottie Scheffler

The 2024 season has been exceptional for Scottie Scheffler. No missed cuts, nine wins, sixteen top-10 finishes, and well-ranking first on both the OWGR list and the FedEx Cup standings. But we obviously can’t say the same for Jordan Spieth. The 31-year-old not only failed to achieve a single win throughout the season but has only three top-10 finishes. He has dropped down to 64 on the OWGR list. But if you rewind to 2015, this was not the case.

He grabbed his first major victory that year at the Masters, shooting an 18-under 270. The win was not just about the trophy and the Green Jacket. He played so exceptionally well that he tied the then-set 72-hole record by Tiger Woods in 1997 and became the second-youngest golfer to win the Masters. Scheffler hadn’t even turned pro at the time, and it was truly Spieth’s year. How the tables turn! However, comparisons are still being made.

In the recent episode of the Fried Egg Golf, Kyle Porter joined Joseph Lamagna and Andy Johnson. Porter asked, “Who ends their career with more majors, Spieth or Scottie?” Scheffler at the time has 2 majors, both Masters, and Spieth has 3; all except the PGA Championship.

The question left both of them baffled by the uncanny comparison. Although both of them answered with Scottie Scheffler, Andy Johnson said, “Well, that’s a great question because I think Spieth can be a prisoner of the moment. I mean, if we did this podcast in 2016, we’d be saying the same things about Jordan that we’re saying right now about Scottie.” Where is the lie? He was at the peak of his game then. In 2015 itself, apart from the Masters win, Jordan Spieth also grabbed the US Open. In the 2014-15 season, there were three other wins and four runner-up positions. He also ranked first in the FedEx Cup standings.

He bagged a total of ten victories in three seasons from 2015 to 2017; that’s how great his momentum was. “Whenever we first got into this, Andy, Rory, and Spieth held At the end of 2015, or I guess after the U.S. Open 2015, they held all four majors. Right. Because Rory won the 2014 Open and PGA. And then Spieth won that 2015 Masters and the U.S. Open.” However, after winning three majors, if Jordan Spieth ends up winning a fourth one, Joseph Lamagna believes things might turn around again. “Spieth at four, I’d feel differently than Scottie at two,” he added.

But there has been the same question throughout. What led to the downfall of Jordan Spieth? As it turns out, the PGA Tour finally answered in November.

After 2017, Jordan Spieth lost his winning streak of bagging one event each year. That is not all. He has failed to grab any wins since 2022. What caused it was a prolonged wrist injury, which occurred during an intense training session. But he did not get it fixed back then, and that was what caused his bad swings. It had been troubling him for seven years, until now.

Jordan Spieth finally took the step to address the issue post-season. On August 31, he shared on social media that he had undergone successful surgery to resolve the issue, shortly after competing in the FedEx St. Jude Classic. “I had a procedure on my left wrist last week, as I had mentioned was the plan,” Spieth posted on X. “The operation went smoothly, and I’m grateful for the exceptional medical team and the support of Annie and my family.”

Spieth’s return hasn’t been on the golf course just yet. Well, after a successful surgery and a beautiful vacation with his wife and son, Jordan Spieth is doing much better.
