Rafael Nadal’s retirement uncertain as Spaniard won’t have final say in Davis Cup plan
Rafael Nadal will retire at the Davis Cup Finals later this month.
Rafael Nadal is gearing up to retire at the Davis Cup Finals, where he will represent Spain one final time in front of a home crowd. But the details of his farewell have been uncertain, as Nadal previously admitted he wouldn’t play if he didn’t feel ready.
Spain’s captain David Ferrer has now had his say on the match line-up after speaking with the 22-time Major champion and his team. And he stated he would make the final decision. Nadal’s final match could be decided at the “last minute” as Ferrer confessed everything was still up in the air. The team leader still doesn’t know who will be in his final squad, let alone whether the retiring star will play singles or doubles.
There have been concerns over another player as Pablo Carreno Busta pulled out of the Paris Masters. “I think the final team will be known next week,” Ferrer told AS. “A few more days and we will announce the team. I have already told all the players that we will see after Paris. I think we will know on Monday or Tuesday.”
Ferrer has also had several talks with Nadal and his team but the retired former No. 3 won’t make his final choice for the match line-ups until he sees everyone in Malaga. He continued: “I don’t know, I’ll have to see them train.
“I’ve spoken to Rafa this week, I’ve spoken several times. Well, let’s see how the training is going; I’ve also spoken to his coach Carlos Moya and Carlos Costa, his agent.
