Emma Raducanu has toiled with injuries since her incredible 2021 US Open victory
Emma Raducanu, the 21-year-old British tennis star, has recently opened up about her personal growth and newfound perspective on wellness amidst ongoing challenges. Speaking to Women’s Health, Raducanu revealed a significant shift in her mindset, particularly in the past few weeks. “Having been through such big changes, wellness to me now is the inner stillness I feel,” she explained.
The former US Open champion emphasised the importance of activities that enrich her mind and body, such as hot yoga, reading, and studying. This mature outlook comes after a tumultuous year marked by tournament losses and injury setbacks. Raducanu’s newfound maturity is evident in her approach to setbacks. She told Women’s Health, “I’ve taught myself not to label things as black or white.
For example, with this injury, I’m trying to catch myself and stop labelling it as like, ‘Oh, I’m so unlucky, this is so bad.'” This perspective has led her to opt out of the WTA competition in China after spraining foot ligaments in Korea. The young athlete has embraced the concept of non-attachment, stating, “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is non-attachment; acknowledging that everything comes and goes.”
Raducanu’s focus on mental wellbeing has become a cornerstone of her approach to tennis and life. She emphasised the importance of cultivating her mind through various activities. “For me, that might mean doing hot yoga, reading, learning, studying – anything to cultivate my mind,” she shared. This holistic approach extends beyond physical training, with Raducanu finding confidence in activities that enrich both her mind and body.
“I take confidence from doing things that really enrich my mind and body and how peaceful I feel,” she explained.
Despite recent setbacks, this new perspective appears to be bolstering Raducanu’s resilience and determination.
Looking ahead, Raducanu has sent a clear message of determination for the upcoming year. Speaking to Women’s Health, she declared, “I’m prepared to work hard and do some damage next year.”
This statement reflects her unwavering commitment to tennis despite recent challenges. Raducanu’s renewed focus on mental and physical wellness appears to have bolstered her confidence for future competitions. While her career has faced hurdles since her 2021 US Open triumph, including early exits from Grand Slams, Raducanu’s evolving perspective suggests a more resilient approach to the sport.
