Karolina Muchova shuts down Chris Evert’s comment about her that drew controversy

Muchova reacts to Evert saying the Czech 'plays like a man.'

Karolina Muchova didn’t really know how exactly to respond to Chris Evert’s remark that drew controversy but highlighted that she doesn’t feel that she plays like a guy. On Thursday, the Czech tennis star ousted Naomi Osaka 6-3 7-6 (5) and her exceptional serving but also volleying were one of the keys to her big win. Moments after the match, Nick Kyrgios acknowledged the 2023 French Open finalist’s volleying skills before proceeding to ask if her idol Roger Federer had anything to do with her developing that part of the game extremely well.

Answering the question, Muchova confirmed that she did look up to the Swiss tennis icon but also some other male players. “She plays like a guy. She wants to play like a guy. The guys have bigger serves than the women, they have better volleys for the most part, they move a little bit better,” Evert said.

Evert drew some criticism, Muchova has now responded
After the American tennis legend made the comment about the Czech, Ons Jabeur called out the former 18-time Grand Slam champion by stating on X, “Can we please stop stereotyping based on gender?” Responding to the Tunisian, the 68-year-old American apologized and said that she could have maybe expressed herself in a different way. And on Saturday, Muchova beat Anastasia Potapova 6-4 6-2 and later addressed the Evert situation.

“I don’t think I play like a man. I don’t know what to say about that. I don’t know exactly what Evert said, but obviously I have been inspired by players like Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic for my game and I like to follow what they do. Still, I was not prepared to answer this question,” the former world No. 7 said. Meanwhile, Muchova is set to play next against this year’s French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini.
