Chris Evert posts heartfelt response to Angelique Kerber’s retirement

Angelique Kerber announced her retirement ahead of the Olympics and classy Chris Evert took to social media to respond.

Chris Evert handles every part of her life with class. Even when she played, even though she did not show much emotion, she never tried to make anyone look bad. In fact, most times, she praises another individual and does so in an extremely genuine way.

If Evert says something about another person or player, you can bet that she did so with forethought and intent and a lack of maliciousness. This is the case with a recent social media post she had about the retirement of Angelique Kerber.

Kerber made her announcement ahead of the Paris Olympics that the games would be her last event. While the 36-year-old has not made a run at a title in a couple of years, she had a highly successful career overall. She won three Grand Slams, each at a different major (the only Slam she did not win was the French Open), and reached No. 1 on the WTA tour.

Chris Evert responds to Angelique Kerber’s retirement
Kerber was seemingly well-liked by her fellow players, and, like Evert, played with a high level of poise and calm. She could be much more emotional on the court than Evert, but never in a way to show up her opponent.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Kerber’s career was that she faced Serena Williams in three of her four Grand Slam finals. The German went 2-1 against the American in those finals.

Kerber did have a good run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, though. She reached the quarterfinals before falling to Zheng Qinwen in three sets with the final set going to a tie-break. While the German did not win her last event, she certainly should be proud of how well she played.

After the match, and in response to another post about Kerber losing and then her impending retirement, Chris Evert wrote, “I will miss her. She was a class act, respectful and gracious to everyone in the tennis world. I loved her game and fight as well.”

Again, that is just class remarking on class. Kerber will be missed. She was a great player on the court and just as good off it.
