Emma Raducanu appears to take swipe at Judy Murray with telling one-word response

Emma Raducanu copped plenty of criticism when she pulled out of her Wimbledon mixed doubles commitments with Andy Murray - which saw his mother Judy get involved - but the female star has subtly hit back

Emma Raducanu has seemingly mocked Judy Murray with a social media dig after she copped the anger of Andy Murray’s mother. The pair’s feud stemmed from Raducanu’s decision to pull out of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon, where she was due to play with Andy in what was a farewell appearance for the two-time winner at SW19. In the immediate aftermath of Raducanu’s decision Judy took to Twitter and said “Yes, astonishing” after the female opted to put her single’s tournament first.

Raducanu is now competing in the Mubadala City DC Open in Washington after choosing to bypass the Olympics. She beat Elise Mertens, who she also saw off at Wimbledon, and shared some photos on social media before interacting with American male Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe, who is also competing in Washington in both the singles and the doubles, jokingly invited Raducanu to partner him in mixed doubles. He said: “Mixed….” followed by a series of shrugging and laughing emojis. Raducanu simply wrote back: “Astonishing,” in what appeared to be a sly dig at Judy.

Andy played on Centre Court for one final time in the first week of Wimbledon alongside brother Jamie in the doubles. He’d pulled out of the singles late in the day but was poised for two doubles efforts – although that became one when Raducanu opted out. The 2021 US Open winner is attempting to reach her former levels once again and reached the fourth round before being knocked out at Wimbledon. Even after her exit Raducanu stuck by her decision despite criticism from elsewhere.

She said: “Of course, I didn’t want to take his last match away from him. But at the end of the day I think a lot of the players in a similar situation would have done the same thing, prioritising their body. I still stand by making the right call. Obviously he was disappointed because it’s his last match. But, yeah, what a champion. I think that hopefully he’ll play in the Olympics and have another farewell there.”

Dan Evans is the man currently partnering Andy in their efforts to claim double glory in the Olympics with the tennis being held at Roland Garros, which hosts the French Open. Evans said at the time he understood Raducanu’s decision but claimed those who commit to doubles should follow through.

“It’s just unfortunate how it played out, with Emma pulling out a few hours before their match on Court No 1 because she had a sore wrist,” he said. “But once you agree to play doubles with someone – especially in a special situation like this – then you should be fully committed to it. I can’t blame Emma for pulling out but there’s a lesson in there about not committing unless you’re 100 per cent on board.”
