Rory McIlroy on the hunt for a new caddie for upcoming tournament
Rory McIlroy is set to compete at the St Jude Championship in August
Think you could do better than Harry Diamond? Well, Rory McIlroy is looking for a new caddie ahead of the upcoming St Jude Championship. The World number three is offering one lucky person the chance to caddie for him during Wednesday’s practice round at the tournament.
The St Jude takes place from August 15-18 at TPC Southwind in Tennessee, and is the first of the FedEx Cup Playoff events. McIlroy currently sits third in the standings. McIlroy is offering someone the chance to take up bag duties for nine holes of Wednesday’s practice. The competition is being run in collaboration with the Alpine Formula One team which McIlroy is an investor in.
Also included in the prize will be flights and accommodation for the winner and a partner, as well as hospitality tickets to the St Jude Championship. Current caddie Diamond has no need to worry, however, as he will be back on the bag for the tournament itself when it tees up on the Thursday. Diamond came in for some criticism following
McIlroy’s collapse at the US Open, but the Holywood golfer was quick to defend his close pal.
Speaking at the Scottish Open earlier this month, McIlroy said: “These guys that criticise when things don’t go my way, they never say anything good when things do go my way. Where were they when I won Dubai earlier year, or Quail Hollow, or the two FedEx Cups that I’ve won with Harry, or the two Ryder Cups, or whatever?
“They are never there to say Harry did such a great job when I win, but they are always there to criticise when we don’t win. At the end of the day, they are not there. They are in the in the arena. They are not the ones hitting the shots and making the decisions.”
