Andy Murray ‘clashes’ with partner over Emma Raducanu photo and ‘wipe your bum’ comment

Andy Murray has a dry sense of humour which can often be lost on his fans - but not on his fellow tennis pros, with the Scot regularly ribbing Liam Broady on social media

Despite common misconceptions, Andy Murray does indeed have a sense of humour. The double Wimbledon champion has often been labelled as dull throughout his career in tennis. However, the Scot possesses a rather dry and straightforward wit, which is frequently mistaken for seriousness. There have been numerous instances where fans believed Murray was having a spat with individuals on social media, when in fact he was merely jesting. Over time, Liam Broady has proven to be an ideal sparring partner for the 37 year old on these platforms. Even now, many assume that the pair are genuinely at odds when they exchange banter online. Mirror Sport takes a look back at some of their previous social media exchanges.

The Emma Raducanu Session
In 2022, Murray and Emma Raducanu had a warm-up session ahead of the Australian Open. The event quickly gained traction online, with many speculating it marked the beginning of a new era, especially after Raducanu’s recent US Open victory. Broady saw an opportunity and decided to take a playful jab at Murray. He tweeted: “Why is Andy’s body shaped like a teapot in the third picture? ” before adding: “I’ve just realised this is Emma’s coach and not Andy hahahahahahaha.”

Murray responded with a sharp retort: “You didn’t realise, Liam. I told you when you messaged me trying to make fun of me. Not only are you an idiot, you’re a liar.” With tweets like that, it’s no wonder people believe Murray and Broady do not like each other.

Broady the Clown
Taking a break from his match, Andy Murray opted to direct his attention towards the commentator narrating Mirra Andreeva’s impressive fightback win over Diane Parry. Moving to social media, Murray criticised the commentary: “Commentator: ‘She really needs to work on the mental side of her game… she’s too hard on herself when she’s losing’. 30 minutes later 7-6 Andreeva wins.

“Maybe the reason she turned the match around is because of her mental strength? Maybe she turned the match around because she is hard on herself and demands more of herself when she’s losing/playing badly? Winner.”

Broady wasn’t about to concede any points as he entered the fray, challenging his one-time doubles partner with his retort: “Mental strength is the wrong phrase. To come from 5-1 down in the third in a slam at her age is great mental strength. But perhaps if she had greater mental composure she wouldn’t have gone 5-1 down in the third in the first place?”

In response, Murray expressed confusion over Broady’s inconsistency: “I don’t understand your tweet. You said mental strength is the wrong phrase and then in the next sentence say coming from 5-1 down is great mental strength. Liam Broady the walking contradiction.”

The Scot then finished off with a clown emoji for good measure. Seemingly conceding, Broady left the argument unchallenged.

Murray Gives His Two Pence
In June, Broady found himself unfortunately having to bow out from the Rothesay Open in Nottingham after a comical self-inflicted injury when he managed to hit his head on the boot of his car. The 30 year old tennis pro likely wasn’t laughing, though, as this mishap meant skipping another tournament and missing out on some prize money.

Taking to social media to disclose his clumsy moment was met with a bit of banter from fellow tennis player Andy Murray. The Scottish sports star couldn’t help but respond: “Think this is the first time I’ve read one of your tweets and believed it.”

It appears Murray knows how to serve sarcasm as well as aces.

The discussion around breakfast options at the Atlanta Open seemed to rile up Broady, who was feeling more than a bit peckish before his tennis bout with Shang Juncheng. In a tweet, he expressed his frustration: “First match at 10am today so have to warm up at 8:30. Breakfast doesn’t open till 9am? Walked into player area and we’ve got… bagels. Really good for a high standard of tennis and tennis tournament in Atlanta.”

Always quick on the return, Murray playfully mocked the situation with his quip: “Hope you are okay mate. That sounds terrible. Surprized you hadn’t checked the breakfast situation ahead of time like most professionals would have done.”

However, Broady volleyed back with a zinger aimed at Murray’s success-assured lifestyle: “You have five people just to wipe your bum for you man. You’ve never checked a situation ahead of time in your life, we are not the same.”
