Wimbledon fans make their feelings clear on Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray’s mom debacle
Emma Raducanu has been told that she does not need to explain herself for pulling out of Wimbledon this past week after her decision not to play alongside Andy Murray at the eleventh hour, in what is set to be the Brit’s final appearance at the tournament. Raducanu chose to withdraw from the mixed doubles competition while suffering numerous injuries that have hampered her over the years.
Her comments did rile some though after she said she chose not to play because of “a bit of stiff wrist” before insisting “I stand by the decision.” Andy Murray’s mom, Judy, later named her decision “astonishing” but then declared that she had been speaking on the scheduling rather than Raducanu’s decision to pull out. Raducanu has suffered a brutal few years after she shocked the sporting world when she won the 2021 US Open at the age of just 18 – missing dozens of tournaments while undergoing surgeries to her ankle and both of her wrists.
After being criticized by some following Judy Murray’s words, fans have leaped to her defense after she made the decision to pull out.
One wrote: “The only reason this has caught fire is because it was Andy Murray’s last Wimbledon. The scheduling at competitions has always been a bit mad. Her mistake was perhaps saying yes in the first place because she is still coming back to fitness after the surgeries last year on her wrists. The scheduling played a massive part in her withdrawing. She does not however deserve the abuse she is getting as a consequence.”
Another fan said: “Emma did NOT have to explain herself to the likes of Judy Murray, I’m sure she would have talked to Andy about her concerns, so Judy wants to keep her opinions to herself.”
While a third stated: “Murray pulls out of singles due to back problems & recent surgery & that’s OK. Raducanu pulls out of mixed doubles due to wrist problems which she has had surgery on & gets backlash. Really?”
Wimbledon was set to be Murray’s last major tournament before he retires after representing Great Britain at the Olympics.
Like Raducanu, Murray has dealt with numerous brutal injuries that have hampered him over the past few years – with him set to walk away after a legendary career.
