Rory McIlroy’s Major Ryder Cup Announcement Left Golf Fans Asking One Question
Did Rory McIlroy take a shot at 2025 Ryder Cup Team USA captain Keegan Bradley earlier this week? McIlroy, asked recently whether he had any interest in captaining the Team Europe squad at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland, has the golf world talking after issuing a blunt response to the question on Thursday.
“No, absolutely not,” McIlroy initially responded, via GolfMagic.com. “I’ve contemplated it for Adare [in 2027] and no, there’s too much work that goes into it.” McIlroy was then asked about the feasibility of being a playing captain in the modern era.”I’ve seen what Luke [Donald] went through preparing for Rome – there’s no way you can be as good a captain as you need to be and be a playing captain as well.”
McIlroy’s comments have been interpreted by many in the golf world as a shot at Bradley, who recently announced that despite his captain status in 2025, he still intends to qualify for Team USA as a player. “Keegan Bradley says he fully intends to make the Ryder Cup team on points but won’t pick himself if he doesn’t,” Daniel Rapoport reported Tuesday.
“Is this a shot at @Keegan_Bradley for wanting to captain and play?” one fan asked. Team USA’s 2025 Ryder Cup roster will ultimately feature 12 players – the top six eligible players in the points rankings and six additional captain’s picks. Bradley currently sits at No. 24 on the U.S. Ryder Cup points list.
