John McEnroe spotted wearing wig but looking fed up in throwback transformation

John McEnroe brought back his iconic 80s Wimbledon look as he was spotted looking miserable while wearing a wig, a red hairband and tennis white on the eve of the Championships

John McEnroe rewound time as he was snapped donning a wig resembling his iconic 80s red hairband and curly mop look. The American tennis legend will be returning to our screens as part of the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon, which begins on Monday. Hopefully, or not depending on how you like McEnroe’s coverage, the 65-year-old will be in brighter spirits than he appeared on Saturday.

McEnroe was pictured looking miserable as he trudged off to a court holding an orange tennis racket and dressed in Nike tennis whites and socks with a black jacket to keep him warm around the set. It’s believed the three-time Wimbledon champion was recreating his famous look as he filmed an advert at a local club.

The look matched his trademark hairdo that he had when he won his first Wimbledon titles in 1979 and 1981. McEnroe triumphed five times at SW19, adding future successes in 1983, 1984 and 1992 after he had ditched the red headband and culled most of his curly, auburn locks.

Ahead of this year’s edition, McEnroe has reiterated his calls for a statue of two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray to be erected to honour his achievements in the sport. Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 2013 since Fred Perry in 1936, he added a second title in 2016.

“He’s absolutely changed the way people look at British tennis. He’s one of the greatest competitors that I’ve ever seen play tennis. It’d be well deserved and it’d be awesome, because two of his three Grand Slam wins (2013 and 2016) were at Wimbledon plus the Olympics (gold medal in 2012).

‘He was part of the ‘big four’ and he finished 2016 as the best player in the world. It’s unfortunate that injuries (mean) you don’t hear about him the same way he did before. It is like the ‘big three’ now.

“There’s the saying that I’ve used many times: ‘The older I get, the better I used to be.’ And unfortunately, when you have injuries, it’s pretty damn hard, if not impossible to get to that level where you were,” McEnroe concluded.
