Holger Rune rips the Queen’s grass-court, but he’s in crisis
The Dane, defeated in the first round by Jordan Thompson, criticized the grass of the Queen's club court
Talking about crisis is now a must; Holger Rune can no longer find positive results and his tennis doesn’t seem to be enough, considering how his two young rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are achieving success and glory. And the transition from clay to grass was not as he expected. Rune was defeated already in the first round of the ATP 500 at the Queen’s Club, beaten by the Australian Jordan Thompson 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
At the press conference, the Dane criticized the tournament board, talking about the danger of the rather unstable courts.
“It was very slippery, to tell the truth. I slipped three times and one of those slips was very important, but there’s no point in blaming the court, I’m the one responsible for the defeat. It’s like that for both of us, and he managed not to slip,” he explained.
Holger suffered three falls during the match, without physical consequences, but one of these in the third set cost him the break and ultimately the match. The season of the 21 year old has been quite disappointing so far. At Roland Garros he showed encouraging signs of recovery, putting finalist Alexander Zverev on the ropes. He will now try to do better at Wimbledon, where last year he stopped in the quarter-finals.
The Danish tennis player was not the only one to experience these problems. Yesterday, other colleagues of his had problems with the maintenance of the fields, also reporting more serious problems. This is the case of Frances Tiafoe, who following a fall was forced to withdraw from he match against Rinky Hijikata. The American reported a hip problem. But it didn’t end there, the match between Alejando Tabilo and Alejando Davidovich Fokina was also interrupted due to high humidity.
