Jordan Spieth joins Travelers Championship field for 2024, won Connecticut’s PGA event in 2017

Another former major champion and Travelers Championship winner is returning for this year’s PGA Tour event. Jordan Spieth, who made arguably the greatest shot in tournament history, will be playing in June’s Signature Event. The tournament announced his commitment on Tuesday morning. Andy Bessette, the executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers, had announced on a May 15 webinar called, ‘From the Driving Range to Driving Change: Inside the Travelers Championship’ that Spieth was expected to commit for this year’s tournament. The three-time major champion had previously told Bessette at two different tournaments that he had planned to play.

Spieth did not play in last year’s Travelers Championship and committed on the day of the deadline in 2022 after finishing his second round of the U.S. Open. Previously announced commitments include seven of the top 10 in the world rankings: No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 2 Xander Schauffele, No. 3 Rory McIlroy, No. 5 Viktor Hovland, No. 6 Ludvig Aberg, No. 8 Patrick Cantlay and No. 9 Collin Morikawa. Others coming to play June 20-23 include No. 11 Max Homa and defending champion Keegan Bradley, ranked 14th, and Rickie Fowler.

There will be approximately 70-80 golfers in the exclusive field with no cut. The total purse is $20 million. In his 2017 victory, Spieth holed out from the front right bunker on the 18th hole at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell to end up defeating Daniel Berger in a sudden death playoff. That was his 10th victory on the PGA Tour and his first appearance at the Travelers Championship.

“Golf fans certainly know how good of a player Jordan is and the impact he’s had on golf throughout his career. Travelers Championship fans saw it and felt it when he won at TPC River Highlands in such dramatic fashion. He’s been great to us, so having him in this year’s player field is yet another reason to get excited about this world-class event,” Bessette said in a statement. This year will be Spieth’s sixth appearance a the Travelers. Now ranked 25th in the world, Spieth has won just three times since on the PGA Tour. His last win came over two years ago at the RBC Heritage. He is 51st in the FedExCup rankings. Spieth has just three top-10 finishes this year in 14 tournaments.
