Everything we learned from Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll divorce papers including prenup
Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage, with the couple sharing a three year old daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy
Rory McIlroy has shockingly filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll, mere hours after celebrating a PGA Tour victory. The couple, who have been married for seven years and share a daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, aged 3, are now set to part ways. The golf sensation, who started dating Stoll in 2014 and wed her in 2017, submitted the divorce papers at Palm Beach County State Court in Florida on Monday. McIlroy, a winner of four major championships, is seeking a dignified and peaceful separation process.
A statement released by McIlroy’s media representatives confirmed the divorce proceedings. “Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” it read. “They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.” The estranged pair are aiming for a co-parenting arrangement, having both lived in Florida for over five years. Mirror Sport has highlighted four key insights gleaned from the divorce documents submitted by McIlroy.
The divorce petition was lodged the day after McIlroy’s latest PGA Tour triumph, indicating that despite personal challenges, he remains focused on his game. His win at the Wells Fargo Championship came after an impressive final round, where he overtook American golfer Xander Schauffele to secure his fourth title at the event.
“I really got some confidence winning in New Orleans with Shane,” McIlroy revealed. “Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done. Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit. But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat. I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.”
The revelation comes just two days before the PGA Championship at Valhalla, Kentucky, where McIlroy is tipped as one of the top contenders to clinch the Wannamaker Trophy after showing signs of form. Legal documents have described the marriage between McIlroy and Stoll as “irretrievably broken”, which has been cited as a key reason for their decision to dissolve their union, according to the Mirror. The couple exchanged vows on April 21, 2017, in a lavish ceremony in Ireland.
Prenuptial agreement in place
The pair had signed a prenuptial agreement on March 17, 2017, and according to the court filing, “the court should determine that the Prenuptial agreement is valid and enforceable”, ensuring both parties adhere to its terms. While McIlroy and Stoll are expected to honour the prenup, the specific details remain confidential.
Request for co-parenting cooperation
The legal documents also clearly outline the proposed plan for both parties to co-parent their daughter, Poppy. The request is for McIlroy and Stoll to have shared custody of Poppy and for a timesharing schedule to be set up. The documents also assert that both parents “have the ability” to provide support for the child, and that this should be established “in accordance with the Florida Child Support Guidelines”. This would also include health insurance for Poppy.
