OUCH! Spieth lands tee shot on fairway after accidentally hitting fan’s elbow!

How much do golf fans love Jordan Spieth? Even when he’s causing them immense pain, they still smile through it all. And no, we’re not talking about the emotional pain he puts his supporters through with his rollercoaster rounds. Or the type of financial pain he causes to people who bet on him every week. We’re talking about literal, physical pain.

On Friday at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Spieth, who needed a late charge to make the cut, blocked a drive way right of the 16th fairway at TPC Craig Ranch. With some vintage Spieth magic, the ball mysteriously ricocheted back into the fairway somehow, though it wasn’t because of a tree, a cartpath, or a grandstand. No, Spieth’s ball nailed some poor dude in the elbow, and the poor dude didn’t just live to tell the tale – he was absolutely chuffed about it:

Man’s got a welt the size of a baseball on his arm and the first thing out of his mouth is “Spieth’s the best, you’re my hero.” What can you say, the people dig the guy. We bet if you asked most people who would be their No. 1 PGA Tour pro they’d want to hit an errant drive off a body part other than their head, Spieth would be a popular answer.

To the surprise of no one, this has happened before. At last year’s Players Championship, Spieth hit a drive off a fan’s knee at the par-5 ninth hole at TPC Sawgrass, and the ensuing bounce wound up helping him make the cut that week. In an incredible twist, the fan Spieth hit happened to be a 23-year marine.

Unfortunately for Spieth’s hometown Dallas crowd, the three-time major winner failed to make the weekend, missing the cut by two shots. A bogey on the 16th was the final blow. Then again, perhaps folks on the grounds will feel a little safer without him cranking drives off their elbows. We kid, we kid.
