When speaking with the iconic supermodel and her 22-year-old daughter at the Planet OMEGA exhibition in New York City, PEOPLE posed the question to Kaia Gerber, whose eyes lit up with excitement when asked.

“What do you want?” Crawford, 57, reiterated the question to Gerber, who’s followed in her mother’s fashionable footsteps, paving a path of her own as a sought-after model in the industry. “Careful what you’re asking!” quipped Gerber — to which her mom clarified, “You’re not getting it now, I’m just saying you should stake it out.”

While Gerber took her time to carefully consider the overwhelming amount of possibilities before answering the hypothetical question, Crawford jumped in to share with PEOPLE the memento she’d pass along to her daughter down the line.

“I wouldn’t give her my engagement ring because probably whoever proposes to you, you’ll want to choose the ring, even though that is a special piece as well,” she explains.

Currently, Gerber in a relationship with Austin Butler, who she’s been tied to since they sparked romance rumors in December 2021 and made their relationship public in March 2022. Following her mother’s answer, Gerber jumped in with an ironic answer: “I was going to choose your engagement ring!” she says with a laugh. “But you can have that one. You need to wear it. I know.”

Crawford replied: “No— I was saying… well eventually I won’t need it. But don’t bury me with it, is what I’m saying!” “This is so morbid,” says Gerber, confirming her answer: “I’ll take the eternity ring.”
